Paul presented me with a concept rich in story and symbolism. Drawing on ancient Egyptian mythology, Paul had envisioned a physical depiction of Apep, snake god of darkness.

First coiling around its wearer in solid platinum form, the snake fragments as it attempts to engulf its greatest enemy; the sun-god Ra, embodied by a Golden South Sea Pearl.

This project was a meeting of minds and a fusion of digital and analogue craft.

The finished piece would showcase Paul’s exceptional skill in hand fabrication and laser welding. My challenge was to design a manufacturing strategy to make this possible. I blended the hand-fabrication elements of Paul’s original concept with cutting-edge CAD design and 3D printing technologies, considering both traditional casting and SLM printing in the early stages. 

The final physical deliverable was a solid 3d printed model for Paul to use as a form tool. The faceted snake form performed as a guide and support structure which, with breath-taking precision, Paul expertly laser-welded over with platinum wire.

The piece went on to be awarded Gold & Bronze in the 2024 Goldsmiths Craftsmanship and Design Awards. Thank you so much Paul for your trust, and the privilege of helping you bring this vision to life!
